19 people sentenced for 13 tons of marijuana

A south Texas lawyer, his father, and 17 other people have been sentenced to prison for their roles in smuggling over 13 tons of marijuana into the country.

Jose Luis Palacios Jr. of Mission was sentenced to 12 years, while his father, Jose Luis Palacios Sr. of Edinburg, received a 5-year prison term.

The sentences stemmed from an investigation which netted 19 people who were involved with smuggling marijuana from Mexico into the United States last spring near the Rio Grande Valley border town of La Casita, 30 miles west of McAllen.

Each week Texas border patrol agents seize anywhere from five to 20 tons of marijuana coming in from Mexico while many tons more slip by.
