Austin police bust man selling overpriced weed on Craigslist
For any of you aspiring dealers out there, advertising your goods on Craigslist is a dumb idea.
An Austin man found out that the police read Craigslist too after an officer arranged a meeting with him after seeing his advertisement.
Responding to a posting entitled “420 Connection!!” which read “High! Sunny tday. I’m here for those looking for the budz, so kind, so green! I’m always Cali-style, fast, easy, friendly and central. Sweet smokie for those reg tokers,” the officer agreed to meet Corey Lynn Plumlee after calling the phone number he listed.
The officer met Plumlee and bought a half ounce. Shortly later Plumlee was arrested and charged with delivery of marijuana, a state jail felony and his bail was set at $6,000.
Selling weed through a very public forum wasn’t the real crime here though. Selling buds at the price of $220 per half ounce was the real crime, especially when dispensary grade cannabis has been going for $10-$15 per gram.
Still, the police could have been doing something much more effective with their time, but with such low dangling fruit, the temptation to make an easy bust on an idiot is hard to resist.
With marijuana related bills being presented during the previous five sessions of the Texas legislature, most recently HB 184 introduced by Rep. Harold Dutton and championed by Texas NORML this year which would have reduced penalties for the possession of one ounce or less to a $500 fine with no jail time, and a pair of polls showing 58% of Texans supporting legalization while 79% oppose jailing people over the matter, it is only a matter of time before stories like this start to become a thing of the past.
Only with the help of fellow Texans though can we begin to put forth our limited police resources towards more pressing ends and stop jailing and fining people for possessing a non-toxic and medically therapeutic plant.
