Hydroponic cannabis seized in Potter County
A story out of the Amarillo Globe-News reports that $742,000 in hydroponic cannabis was seized during a traffic stop in west Amarillo.
A Potter County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a rental van on Interstate 40 and when the four passengers’ stories conflicted, a search was conducted which turned up 65 pounds of cannabis.
The figure of $742,000 is curious because it works out to over $11,400 per pound, which is much more than any street price. This means that grams are roughly being sold for $25 and police are basing their figures on single gram sells.
Sheriff Brian Thomas said the suspects were transporting the marijuana from California to somewhere in Texas and that “the marijuana is thought to be hydroponic, a particularly potent variety.”
The occupants, ages 27, 21, 18 and 16 were all from California. Police arrested the 27 and 21 year old and said they didn’t believe the two teenagers knew anything about the cannabis. The 18 year old was released and the 16 year old was released into custody with Child Protective Services.
A common misconception about the potency of cannabis includes the belief that hydroponically grown plants are more dangerous because growers typically get a higher yield from the controlled atmosphere, which leads them to grow strains which are higher in THC content, the ingredient which produces the high.
THC at any amount, whether lower potency or higher, has the same effects on the body and does not cause damage. It can be compared to an alcohol content, which means a higher potency can get a person higher with smaller amounts of the plant’s flower. Though while alcohol is toxic to the body and can cause severe damage and death, THC is non-toxic and it is impossible to die from its consumption.
Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture and is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil.
