NORML of Waco Inc. held its monthly meeting on Saturday, June 14, at Comfort Inn and Suites, with roughly 30 people attending the event.

Highlights included a presentation by Legally NORML, along with speakers such as NORML of Waco Inc. founder Clif Deuvall and Texas Cannabis Report founder Stephen Carter.

IMG_0542Kayla Brown, the founder of Legally NORML — a pro-cannabis chapter for law students that she organized at Texas A&M Law School in Fort Worth — spoke about her vision for the organization and expanding Legally NORML to include other law schools, such as Baylor University in Waco. Her presentation included the absurdity of tactics used to spot stoned drivers, which includes a 72 hour course and a less than fifty percent success rate.

IMG_0562Joining Brown to represent Legally NORML were Zack Brown, who spoke about hemp and how the laws are changing surrounding growing and selling hemp-based products in the United States, and Jerek Hart, who spoke about racial prejudices and the costs associated with an American system that incarcerates more of their own citizens than any other country.

IMG_0573Following the keynote presentation by Legally NORML, Deuvall spoke about the birth and growth of NORML of Waco Inc. and took some time for questions and answers from those in attendance.

Carter then briefly spoke to the crowd about Texas Cannabis Report, a news website dedicated to cannabis stories and columns about marijuana in the Lone Star State.

In addition to being solid representatives for the cannabis movement, both Deuvall and Carter are running for public office this year.

Deuvall is running for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives, as the NORML of Waco Inc. founder aims to remove incumbent Charles ‘Doc’ Anderson in District 56.

Carter, meanwhile, is running for McLennan County Commissioner in Precinct 2.

Both Deuvall and Carter are running as Libertarian candidates.

NORML of Waco Inc. will be meeting once again in July, with a date and location to be announced at a later time.
