Letter to the Editor: An Argument for a Real Discussion on the Legalization of Cannabis

For many years now, we’ve been told the horrors of marijuana use. It was demonized nearly a century ago as an evil drug used by “colored” people and jazz entertainers.

Harry Anslinger, the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics said, “There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the U.S., and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others.” and “Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.” Much of the early propaganda against marijuana had more to do with out and out racism than public safety. Furthermore, the many uses of cannabis worried many powerful people in various industries because it is a very versatile plant that could be produced cheaper and easier than their products. Then, just as today, the wealthy industrialists had much control over those in the government who make legislative decisions and marijuana was deemed unsafe and outlawed nationwide.

Many studies have been done regarding the dangers of or medicinal qualities of cannabis have been performed over several decades. In ’72 Richard Nixon wanted a larger budget for his war on drugs. He thought that if he proved Cannabis caused lung cancer like cigarettes do, he would get the support he needed. He gave the Medical College of Virginia 2 years to do a study on the effects of THC on the body. In ’74 the study was completed. It turns out, THC when ingested in highly concentrated forms (such as eating Cannabis oil) will attack any mutated cells in your body while strengthening and rejuvenating the healthy cells. They found the PERFECT cure for Cancer. It worked fast, it worked well, it worked on many different forms of Cancer in ALL stages and it had ZERO harmful side effects. (Unlike Chemo which deteriorates your entire body and kills 1 in 5 patients. Not only that, but other research shows it dissolves ALL forms of tumors and can even combat super-bugs like MRSA.) When Richard Nixon saw the results of the study he was FURIOUS. He threw the entire report in the trash and deemed the study classified. In 1976 President Gerald Ford put an end to all public cannabis research and granted exclusive research rights to major pharmaceutical companies, who set out — unsuccessfully — to develop synthetic forms of THC that would deliver all the medical benefits without the “high”. Rather than legalize marijuana for medicinal use, out government let pharmaceutical companies try to replicate its qualities. Why? Because they would prefer these corporations rake in massive profits rather than allow every man, woman, and child have the access to a natural medicine which is readily available worldwide. This is absolute evidence, to me, that our government has no interest in public health on this issue. There are DOZENS of legitimate medical studies that verify MARIJUANA KILLS CANCER. Why, then, are we forced to have POISON pumped into our bodies which have infinitely more harmful side effects, and are not proven as effective as the natural, proven cure, cannabis? Easy, have you seen what chemotherapy costs? Money, profit, and greed pure and simple.

Another point I would like to make is regarding our over populated prison system. Do you know how many Americans we have in jail RIGHT NOW for marijuana charges? Over 40,000! WHY? Otherwise honest, hard working, non violent Americans in PRISON for possession or distribution of a plant that grows naturally! We spend BILLIONS housing, feeding, and supervising these people who are guilty of nothing more than recognizing the hypocracy of the law and refusing to adhere to it. Think about those prescription medication commercials, at the end they list all the harmful and potentially fatal side effects… Shouldn’t the drug dealers that push that poison be in jail? I would rather any one of my family members use natural medicine than the synthetic crap pushed across pharmacy counters nationwide.

Lastly, and this is the one that should get even the staunchest opponent to marijuana legalization’s attention… Tax revenue. Colorado pulled in $2 million in taxes related to the sale of recreational marijuana…in January 2014 alone. That is an absolutely staggering number. If Texas were to legalize marijuana for medical, industrial, and recreational use, we would see similar tax revenue added to our budget. Think what that could do for Texas. Our education system, our roads and bridges, helping to feed our poor and homeless veterans. We could do so much to improve the quality of living here in Texas, not just for those who chose to use marijuana, but for everyone.

If you find that you agree with these arguments, there is a group here in East Texas who are actively campaigning for marijuana reform, Nacogdoches NORML. You can find us on Facebook. Do yourself, your loved ones, and your state a favor and educate yourself on the benefits of Texas legalizing marijuana, get out there and spread the word. Changing public perception is the first step in realizing a future where we can have access to medicine we need, where industry can produce many hemp derived products, and where those who choose to partake do not have to live in fear of being incarcerated or have their reputations tarnished unnecessarily for making a choice that, ultimately the federal government has no business intruding upon.

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.” Genesis 1:29
