Major rallies slated for Austin and Fort Worth this May to support marijuana legalization

2014 MJ March DFW

Dating back to 1999, groups around the world have marched in solidarity to support marijuana legalization and remember those who have been harmed by the war on cannabis.

For several years now, marches have taken place in both Fort Worth and Austin, put on by DFW NORML and Texas NORML. The events have typically drawn between 300 and 700 people each.

Both groups have announced their plans for this year’s marches, which will take place on Saturday, May 3.

These free events begin with a brief march through downtown, and then end with various speakers and musical performances.

texas normlThis year’s march in Austin will begin at City Hall where everyone will meet and get organized before marching down Congress Avenue to the Capitol’s south steps where a rally will be held. The march will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Speaking at the rally will be Bill Norton, Co-Founder of Texas NORML, Heather Fazio with Marijuana Policy Project, and Vincent Lopez who is Texas NORML’s Director of Patient Outreach.

DFW NORML’s format will be a little different. Instead of just a march and rally, they will be holding an all day festival of sorts.

Beginning at noon, people will meet at Mambo’s Tapas Cantina which is located at the Federal Plaza in Fort Worth. The march itself will begin at 4:20 p.m. and activists will gather at the panther fountain located at Throckmorton and West 9th St. at Federal Plaza.

Organizers have not yet finalized the march route or the speakers, but will likely march to the historic court house like they did last year. More details about who will be speaking will come out in the near future.

After the march everyone will gather back at Mambo’s for an after party.

This year DFW NORML is going all out to ensure that people know ahead of time about the march. In an effort to boost attendance and awareness, they will be purchasing a billboard in a very prime location.

To help fund the purchase of this advertising space, they have began a fundraiser specifically for paying the costs of the billboard. They recently began taking donations and have already reached about 75% of their $2,000 goal.

For those interested in helping DFW NORML raise money in order to make this year’s march one of the biggest ever, visit their donation page. Any amount helps, even $5.

Mark your calendars for May 3 and come on out to either Austin or Fort Worth to help raise awareness and show support for legalizing cannabis. Take this opportunity to meet with like-minded people in your area as well and find out what the movement to legalize in Texas is all about!
