Son of south Texas mayor arrested for marijuana distribution

Ruben Oscar Villarreal JrThe son of Rio Grande City’s mayor has been arrested for marijuana distribution.

Ruben Oscar Villarreal Jr., the 30-year-old son of Mayor Ruben Villarreal, has been charged with one count of felony delivery of marijuana, one count of Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana and four misdemeanor counts of delivery of marijuana, the McAllen Monitor reported.

Police raided the home where he was staying and recovered about two and a half ounces of marijuana, along with paraphernalia, scales, and baggies.

Authorities also arrested Ruben Oscar Villarreal Jr.’s brother Michael Villarreal, 25, and Anthony Hernandez, 32, but later released them without charges.

Ruben Villarreal, Rio Grande City mayor, told the Monitor that he does not have a close relationship with his son.

“We always want our children to make good decisions, but in the cases that they don’t, all we can do as parents is to love them and hope that in the future they’ll make better decisions,” Ruben Villarreal said Saturday.

Ruben Oscar Villarreal Jr. could face up to two years on the state jail felony charge if convicted.
