Sweet irony as McGruff crime dog actor sentenced to 16 years for growing pot

John MoralesSure to be the biggest story of irony this year, the actor from Texas who played McGruff the Crime Dog has been sentenced to a hefty stint in prison for growing marijuana, among other things.

John R. Morales who donned the costume many times to warn kids about breaking the law was pulled over back in 2011 for speeding in Galveston. For whatever reason, police decided to use drug sniffing dogs on his vehicle, which resulted in the search his vehicle, turning up blueprints for an indoor growing operation, along with cannabis seeds.

This led to a warrant and search of Morales’ home, where officers found over 1,000 marijuana plants being grown. They also found 27 weapons and 9,000 rounds of ammunition. Oh yeah, and a rocket launcher as well.

The 41-year-old Houston native recently plead guilty and was sentenced to 16 years in prison this past Monday.

Another by-product of the War on Drugs bites the dust.
