Texas man gets 18 years for 18 pounds of pot

Police in Lincoln, Illinois found more than 18 pounds of marijuana in Roel Lopez’s car and motel room last September after they received a tip that a lot of cannabis was being brought in from Texas.

Lopez, who is from Texas, recently learned that he would be spending 18 years in jail for that 18 pounds of marijuana, amounting to one year per pound. Had he been busted in Texas, he would have faced two to 10 years for the same amount had he been charged with possession, and two to 20 years for a distribution charge.

Lopez pleaded guilty back in May.
